I wasn’t really interested in cooking until I moved to a new apartment where I lived by myself and I had no choice but to learn how to do it. I was getting sick of eating out and/or getting takeout, and it was getting a bit expensive given my meager salary at the time. I wanted to learn from the best and was told by a friend that I should check out Gordon Ramsay, but I couldn’t really find any details in the Gordon Ramsay masterclass review online so I decided to just try it out and see for myself.
Back then, I didn’t want to commit to the learning process, so I just started binge-watching Gordon Ramsay’s shows. Hell’s Kitchen, Kitchen Nightmares, MasterChef – you name it, and you can bet that I’ve seen it. They are quite entertaining, sure, but I didn’t really learn any actual cooking from these shows. The shows also didn’t really inspire me to learn to cook, they were more an after-work entertainment. Everything changed in 2016.
Until four years ago, I didn’t even know how to properly chop an onion. That time, I was dating a vegan guy and he was staying at my place for the night for the first time. The following morning, I thought it would be nice to prepare a nice breakfast for both of us: but all I could offer him was coffee. I realized that all those hours I spent watching Gordon Ramsay on those shows could have been spent in learning how to actually cook. When “vegan guy” left my apartment that day, I went on YouTube and found all these actual cooking videos of Gordon Ramsay. Since then, my interest has been piqued.
I scoured the Internet and found Gordon Ramsay’s avocado toast recipe. It looked pretty easy to follow, so I went out and did some grocery shopping. The ingredients were pretty simple: sourdough bread, olive oil, chili flakes, lemon, and black sesame seeds.
I thought it would be very easy to take on this mini challenge I set for myself, but I was wrong. What they don’t tell you about learning to cook on your own is that 1) “cooking” starts way before any ingredient is put on the stove, and 2) you really need a good teacher. I learned these two things the hard way, so let me share my experience so you wouldn’t have to make the same mistake.
1) Cooking in and of itself is an art: that’s why they call it Culinary Arts. It takes a lot of time, effort, and commitment to master the craft. At the beginning of my journey, all I wanted to do was to make a simple yet “elevated” avocado toast for “vegan guy”. By the end of it, I felt empowered: like I could take on any kind of challenge.
You see, I did get the ingredients on my grocery run – but when I got home, I realized that my avocados are super firm and bitter. It turns out that they are not yet ready to be eaten. I mean, you could eat them, but trust me: it’s much better to wait until they’re at their best.
So yeah, I tried to prepare Gordon Ramsay’s avocado toast with an unripe avocado. I mixed the chili flakes, black sesame seeds, lemon zest, and salt in a bowl – as he instructed. I zested the lemon with a cheese grater as I didn’t have a zester. I got to slicing the avocado, but it was too tough and I almost cut myself. I slathered oil and salt onto the slices of sourdough bread, toasted them a bit as per instructions. I arranged the whole thing the best way I could, but the avocado was too bitter that I didn’t really enjoy my first creation.
My first time to try the recipe didn’t go as well as I hoped, but since I can access the video on YouTube any time I want and I still had some ingredients left, I thought of trying it again a couple of days later. Lo and behold, the avocado was at its best, I followed Gordon Ramsay’s instructions to the T. I took a bite and I’d say it was the best toast I’ve ever tasted: and I can’t believe that I made it on my own!
Later, I would learn that getting the right ingredients and learning to prepare them properly is key to cooking good meals. Eventually, with the help of the Gordon Ramsay MasterClass, I would learn that “perfecting” even a simple meal like this requires a lot of learning, trying, and making mistakes. Which brings me to my second point…
2) A good teacher can make all the difference: without a mentor, everything will be twice as hard. With a good teacher, not only will it not be difficult but it will make the entire experience more enjoyable.
From my avocado toast fiasco, I tried to do my own research and learn more about the processes involved in cooking. I learned that while using a cheese grater to zest a lemon is okay, using a zester (or proper tools, in general) makes a ton of difference. However, it took me a lot of time to find all the answers I needed. I felt so lost because although all of Gordon Ramsay’s videos on YouTube are entertaining, I couldn’t really grasp the lessons well.
I came across the Gordon Ramsay MasterClass, signed up, and I learned more in just a few hours a week doing the courses than doing my own research on the Internet. As a MasterClass member, I got access to the Office Hours feature: which meant that I was able to ask my questions to the master chef himself! The experience was a bit surreal, but at the same time was truly inspirational in my cooking journey.
How much is Gordon Ramsay MasterClass?
Gordon Ramsay has two cooking courses on MasterClass and can be availed for $90 each, that is, if you want to purchase just one course at a time. However, MasterClass itself offers an annual subscription of $180 that allows you to access all classes: be it Gordon Ramsay’s or not.
I figured since I wanted to get both Gordon Ramsay Cooking I and Cooking II courses, and these two courses combined are already worth a 1-year all-access pass to all MasterClass courses, I opted for the year-long subscription.

How long is Gordon Ramsay MasterClass?
Each course has 20 lessons, each lesson lasting for about 20 minutes. Before starting any lesson, you can access the overview of the whole course including the list of recipes and ingredients included in the course. You can access these lists any time you want, and whenever you’re ready, you can try and cook the dishes yourself. Take as much (or as little) time you need to complete the course: it all depends on your availability.
Where does Gordon Ramsay teach?
Gordon Ramsay teaches classes at his restaurants, but unless you live in London, learning from the master chef this way would be a difficult (and costly) thing to do. This is among the reasons why I’m grateful for the Gordon Ramsay MasterClass course: as I didn’t have to move miles from home just to learn how to cook from a world-renowned chef.
Is MasterClass worth it?
I would say I have gained a lot from all the MasterClass courses that I took, but in terms of being “worth it”, these are the things that I find truly remarkable about the platform.
The production value in each lesson is astonishing: even if you don’t plan on trying to cook any of the dishes, the quality of the videos is already worth every penny. As a photographer myself, all the shots were professionally and creatively made. You can tell that everyone involved in the making of the videos are true masters of their craft. I appreciate that they put that much love into the content of the courses because it helps in keeping us students involved and interested.
With MasterClass, you can learn basically anything you could think of: not just cooking. After completing the two cooking courses, I switched to other courses on the platform and learned about film making, acting, and even fashion. All these lessons are taught by experts in their respective fields: enabling me to learn and develop new skills.
Apart from that, you could also access the lessons any time the mood strikes. If you were enrolled in an actual class at a culinary school (or any school, for that matter), you have to follow the school’s schedule, which would be difficult to commit to especially if your job already takes much of your time and energy (like mine does).
If you want to cook like a chef, this Masterclass is the one for you. I made this Gordon Ramsay masterclass review because I was really impressed with the way he guided me. I no longer have to depend on takeout and I’ve saved a lot of money by learning this skill. I’m also not with “vegan guy” anymore, but now I at least know how to make a tasty and classy avocado toast – and more.
